Boat Survey and registration (South Africa only)
There have in recent months been some major changes in the way SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) apply and enforce safety regulations with regard to boat surveys and registration.
These include changes to the requirements for built-in buoyancy for all boats, whether used offshore or on sheltered waters. All sheltered water exemptions have been revoked – every boat now requires prescribed buoyancy by law. In addition hereto, all non inflatable sea-going vessels are required to provide “level floatation” to allow passengers to sit on top of the hull when capsized.
All boats require a new format of buoyancy certificate containing prescribed drawings and calculations indicating positioning of buoyancy and conformance to the legal requirements.
In order to simpify the process of registering your boat for the 2011/2012 season, we’ve put together a list of simple instructions (which apply to most recreational boats) below:
1) If you have purchased your boat prior to 2011, you will require a new buoyancy certificate which complies with the new requirements above. If you own a Falcon Inflatable boat, a new certificate will automatically be issued at the time of survey, free of charge. If you’re not a Falcon owner, please obtain a new buoyancy certificate from your manufacturer before the Survey. If not available, we will gladly guide you to an authorized surveyor for assistance. Please note that non-inflatable boats may require additional buoyancy to be installed (to achieve “level floatation”) – your surveyor will be able to assist you with this.
2) Your boat and safety gear will require visual inspection by a surveyor. Please ensure that your fire extinguishers have been serviced and note that surveys take place strictly by appointment only.
3) Please submit your details using the form below:
